Footnotes

  • The crest is that of Cranstoun, recorded in Scotland from 1609, extinct 1869.

It relates to the legend that a crane stands on one leg, holding a stone. Described on its frequent appearance in heraldry as 'a crane in its vigilance' the crane is said to be watching for enemies and will be woken up if it dozes off and drops the stone.

When the unmarried William, 7th Baron Cranstoun, died in 1788 he was succeeded by his brother James, a distinguished naval officer who died without issue in 1790. This silver must have been engraved for his nephew James Edmund Cranstoun who became 9th baron.
