Rover 1753 "Give a dog a bad name, and hang him"
31 x 47cm (12 3/16 x 18 1/2in).
together with a watercolour of a Trout taking a fly by Keith Andrews (2)

  • In Rover's days dogs were hanged and not shot. He hunted in Yorkshire but developed a skin disease that was so bad he was hung. His body was subsequently thrown into a pit which had a stream that contained sulphur.
Some weeks later the hunt passed by and heard Rover and pulled him out to find him well. He seems to have survived on dead donkey and sulphurous water to cure him sufficiently to allow him to continue to hunt for another two years
