A massive William IV carved giltwood and composition console table and mirror
second quarter 19th century
The rectangular plate within a boldly carved frame with foliate scrolls and rocaille-work, the table of serpentine outline with moulded carrera marble top, the pierced frieze incorporating scallop shells and interwoven foliate scrolls, raised on four cabriole legs with C-scroll capitals, the table wide 237cm, deep 60cm, high 84cm, the pier glass wide 200cm, high 294cm

  • This impressive table and mirror dates to the first waive of French influenced and rococo inspired furniture in Britain in the 19th century. Designs appeared in influential periodicals such as Ackermann's Repository, published in 1824, George Smith's Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guide, published 1826, and Thomas King's Designs for Carving and Gilding, published c.1830, where a a related console and mirror is published under the title, 'The old French style'.
