Burr was a member of the celebrated 'Scott Lauder Group' at the Trustees' Academy in the early 1860's, which included his brother John, Chalmers, McTaggart, Orchardson and Pettie. Burr, like many of the group, followed the established tradition of moving to London in 1861 seeking recognition at the Royal Academy. This fine example of Scottish rural genre, inspired by Wilkie and the Dutch tradition, exploits the comic potential and cosy sentimentality of a theme popularised by the Faeds.
