"In the autumn of 1914 he may well have been on his way to Kirkcudbright when he stopped at Crawford...a few houses, an inn and an obelisk memorial, surrounded by moorland. He stayed perhaps a few days and, painting landscape for the first time since Arran, produced work of uncompromising modernism, still in his Van Gogh technique. The stolid geometry of Kirkcudbright, its tolbooth, castle and harbour, provided inspiration and the type of subject-matter which lent itself to the geometrical analysis which was still the artist's dominant concern. These works are also some of the last where colour is pushed beyond naturalism into the territory of fauvism."
