An impressive pair of walnut, bronze and bevelled glass showcases
by F. Sage & Company Ltd., first quarter 20th century,
Each with domed top and blind fretwork frieze above a pair of patinated bronze doors with re-entrant corners, within bow-front sides and enclosing adjustable shelves, with a pair of quarter-veneered cupboards and conforming bowed and fielded panels below, on cabriole legs with shell carved apron and claw and ball feet, 188cm wide x 58cm deep x 240cm high, (74" wide x 22.5" deep x 94" high)

  • Provenance: Supplied to Hamilton & Inches of Edinburgh.

    The firm of Sage and Company was founded by Frederick Sage (1830-1898). In 1876 it won a prize for its 'airtight showcases' at the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia.

    Other notable commissions included the re-fitting of Harrods in 1905, similar work for Selfridges and interiors for Cunard and P & O shipping lines. In 1921 the firm won the prestigious instruction to re-fit the Galleries Lafayette in London's Regent Street.

    Following the end of the second world war the company undertook extensive work in during restoration to the Palace of Westminster.
