Robert Phillips and his brother Magnus founded the firm Phillips Brothers in 1839, trading at 31 Cockspur Street, London. They moved to 23 Cockspur Street in 1862 and the company name was changed to Phillips Brothers & Son around 1865. Robert Phillips (1810-1881) was the leading partner and became one of the principal jewellers in London to work in the revivalist style. He was the only English jeweller to be awarded a gold medal at the Paris Universal Exhibition in 1867. He and Carlo Giuliano were known to have worked together and similarities can be seen in Phillips' jewellery. After his death the company was continued by his sons, Alfred and Claude, his brother William and his wife Helen. The firm ceased to trade in 1902.
