"In the bushveld Pierneef was on home territory. Years of sketching in the field had made him intimately familiar with the forms of each variety of tree and shrub". In the 1950s, Pierneef continued to spend considerable time travelling and painting the Transvaal veld. The present lot, a river in the Transvaal, painted late in his career, shows Pierneef's confident approach built on years of sketching en plein air. The composition, replete with Pierneef's recognisable earthy African colours, subtle lighting, and the juxtaposition of boldly outlined rock formations with the impressionistic grassy banks in the background, illustrates Pierneef's definitive style.
