    EXHIBITED
Another edition from the same series (29/40) was exhibited in Brussels, Palais des Beaux Arts, William Kentridge, in 1998

Throughout his career, Kentridge has given much of his time to the direction of 'moving pictures', crafting intensely skilled and profoundly imaginative films based entirely upon his handmade charcoal drawings. 6 Films comprises of a series of three to eight minute films, (Johannesburg 2nd greatest city after Paris, Mine, Monument, Sobriety, Obesity & Growing Old, Felix in Exile and History of the main complaint), published as a video catalogue after the completion of the sixth film of the Soho Eckstein series.

Of his film-making the artist has said: "On the one hand, Felix in Exile fits into a series of films to be part of an ongoing story, on the other it functions as a diary. That is to say, a record of images and thoughts occupying me at the time of making it. As with the other films, Felix in Exile did not start with a coherent script or storyboard...it is in the process of working that my mind gets into gear - by which I mean the rather dumb physical activity of stalking the drawing, or walking backwards and forwards between the camera and drawing; raising, shifting, adapting the images...

"The idea is for the film to develop in the way a drawing might. Starting with an initial image or idea, but allowing that in the very physical process of making the film (or drawing) new connections will emerge, new emphasis will be taken. So in the end, the film (or drawing) is more than could have been consciously planned." (as quoted in the gallery guide for William Kentridge: Drawings for Projection at The Drawing Room, at the Drawing Center, New York, January 9-February 14, 1998)

These animated, whimsical and melancholic films offer a lyrical meditation on contemporary South Africa, openly addressing issues of apartheid, class inequity and rampant free market capitalism. The works are mesmerizing by both as a kind of pure cinema and dramatic mode of live drawing.
