Footnotes

  • The current lot bears a striking resemblance, in smaller form, to a 2m high steel sculpture, entitled Sculpture III, included in the pictorial survey of the book Edoardo Villa: Sculpture (1980) and published to coincide with the artist's retrospective at the Rand Afrikaans University in the same year. As Karel Nel and Amalie von Maltitz explain, throughout the 1960s and into the '70s, Villa's "steel and bronze works continued to inform each other. Modelling and constucting often followed in close alternation in Villa's creative flow: shapes from one medium were transposed to the other and so a process of reciprocal innovation developed".
