Nikolaus Knüpfer (Leipzig circa 1603-1655 Utrecht)
The Liberation of Saint Peter black chalk, pen and brown ink and wash on paper, verso leg studies in black chalk 36.4 x 30.5cm (14 5/16 x 12in).
The attribution to Knüpfer has been confirmed by Jo Saxton and Peter Schatborn, on the basis of photographs. Mrs Saxton observes that it comes closest in style to Knüpfer's monogrammed drawing, now in a private collection in Germany, which served as preparation for his painting of Abdalonymous now in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (see: J. Saxton, Nicolaus Knüpfer, Doornspijk, 2005, cat. no. D23 and illus. D23).
