Footnotes

  • The attribution to Knüpfer has been confirmed by Jo Saxton and Peter Schatborn, on the basis of photographs. Mrs Saxton observes that it comes closest in style to Knüpfer's monogrammed drawing, now in a private collection in Germany, which served as preparation for his painting of Abdalonymous now in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (see: J. Saxton, Nicolaus Knüpfer, Doornspijk, 2005, cat. no. D23 and illus. D23).
