Footnotes

  • The subject of the present painting may relate to the story of Old Hamlet's death by a snakebite in the ear. The ghost of his father later tells Hamlet the truth of his death:

    Now, Hamlet, hear.
'Tis given out that, sleeping in my orchard,
A serpent stung me..... But know, thou noble youth,
The serpent that did sting thy father's life
    Now wears his crown.
