An Imperial three-colour circular lacquer box and cover
Qianlong
The cover exquisitely carved through three layers of yellow, green and red lacquer with a detailed scene of a scholar writing on a scroll accompanied by a boy holding his brushpot and brushes, both figures on a terrace and being observed by a lady leaning out of a pavilion, all set within an ornamental lotus pond around which other scholars variously play chess in a bamboo grove, converse while crossing a low bridge and inscribe calligraphy on a rock, the sides of the cover and box each divided by a rope border in six sections, each containing confronted animalistic stylised scrolls. 17.4cm (6¾in) diam. (2).

Footnotes

  • 清乾隆 御製剔彩庭園人物圖圓蓋盒

The present box and cover has all the attributes of the Imperial workshops: it is luxuriously carved in three differently coloured layers of yellow, green and red; it is decorated on the sides with panels enclosing archaistic confronted dragons, inspired by the Qianlong emperor's call for inspiration to be derived from antiquity and which translated to all medium of arts imitating archaic bronze forms and decorative designs; and the playful imitation of one material using another demonstrated in the present box and cover in the rope-twist border so deftly carved.

Compare a related circular box and cover, Qianlong mark and period, and another with a rope-twist and archaic dragon design, mid Qing Dynasty, from the Qing Court Collection, illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum: Lacquer Wares of the Qing Dynasty, Beijing, 2006, pls.26 and 53.
