The ruyi sceptre, meaning 如以 'as you wish', expresses the desire that that someone's wishes come true; as such, a ruyi sceptre was considered a most suitable gift for an honoured friend or high ranking official, particularly on the occasion of a birthday.

Ruyi sceptres were made in the widest range of materials, from jade and hardwoods, to gilt and precious stones and organic materials such as lacquer, ivory and bamboo. It is particularly rare, however, to find a ruyi sceptre made of porcelain, perhaps due to its natural fragility making it a less suitable material for such a long, slender shape. The present lot is also highly unusual for its amusing design, with highly detailed and playful Buddhist lions, carefully moulded and enamelled, all increasing the level of complexity for the craftsmen and the rarity of such a piece surviving.

Compare another porcelain ruyi sceptre, but of more conventional design, sold at Christie's London, 14 May 2013, lot 278; and another inscribed with a Daoguang seal mark and of the period sold at Christie's New York, 15-16 September 2011, lot 1633.
