The present lot, together with the preceding lot 211, represent rare examples of the highest quality porcelain and enamel production, very comparable in technical expertise and artistry to pieces from the earlier Qianlong reign. See, for example, a famille rose and gilt white-ground vase, Qianlong seal mark and of the period, from the Huaihaitang Collection illustrated by P.Lam, Ethereal Elegance: Porcelain Vases of the Imperial Qing: The Huaihaitang Collection, Hong Kong, 2007, no.126, which exhibits the same masterful elegant foliate scrolls, filling the available space without overpowering the overall delicacy of the vase. The Huaihaitang vase also shows the same formal perfection in the decorative borders at the shoulder and feet as on the present lot.

Another rare example of this type of famille rose scrolling design incorporating chilong, but which do not grasp lingzhi fungus as on the present lot, can be found in the Nanjing Museum and is illustrated in Treasures in the Royalty: The Official Kiln Porcelain of the Chinese Qing Dynasty, Shanghai, 2003, p.370.

Compare a related pair of famille rose vases from the estate of Judith D.Peabody, New York, with Jiaqing seal marks and of the period, sold at Sotheby's Hong Kong, 8 April 2011, lot 3076.
