Provenance: a Swedish private collection, according to the family, acquired in China between 1915 and 1924 by a member of the Swedish 'China Circle', and thence by descent.

    來源:瑞典私人收藏,據說由瑞典「中國圈子」的成員於1915至1924年間得於中國,並由家族繼承下去

The fine quality of the delicately-shaded enamelling and the incised sgraffiato ground suggest that the present lot is likely to date to the 18th century. The mark of the present lot is very well-executed; examples of a three-pronged element at the top of the 'zhi' character can be found in iron-red enamel and in gilt on vases with Qianlong marks and of the period in the Qing Court Collection, and further examples of the three-pronged element in underglaze blue can be found on Jiaqing mark and period vases, also in the Qing Court Collection. This suggests that the present vase could be dated to late in the Qianlong period, on the cusp of commencement of the Jiaqing period.

Compare a similar vase sold in these rooms, 8 November 2012, lot 80, and another larger example sold at Christie's New York, 15 September 2011, lot 1663.
