Compare a famille rose vase, Shengde Tangzhi mark, Daoguang period, of similar form and with bat handles, but with pink ground and the body decorated with the 'antiques', illustrated in The Complete Collections of Treasures of the Palace Museum: Porcelain with Cloisonné Enamel Decoration and Famille Rose Decoration, Hong Kong, 1999, pl.188.

The present vase is highly symbolic in its decoration, with the lotus blossom symbolic of Buddhism; bat handles and bats suspending lotus scrolls, representing the blessing that the owner's wishes be granted as well as the 'five wishes'. These wishes are further multiplied by the wan emblem and imbued with the blessing of longevity associated with the lingzhi fungus and ruyi heads.
