A large and rare Yaozhou-type green-glazed 'peony scroll' carved bowl
Northern Song Dynasty
Finely potted with broad flaring sides rising from a small very slightly stepped foot, the interior carved with two slender overlapping stems reaching into the centre of the dish, the stems issuing three luscious peony blossoms amid elegantly curling leaves, all enclosed within an incised circle leaving the border beneath the rim undecorated, the exterior similarly incised with a simple line beneath the rim, all covered with a greyish-green glaze with a fine craquelure pooling attractively in the recesses.

    It is rare to find a Yaozhou dish of such size. For other dishes of similar peony or other floral design but of the more common dimensions of approx. 20cm diameter, see Mayuyama, Seventy Years, Vol.I, Tokyo, 1976, nos. 346 and 348, and another bowl with fine intertwined stems formerly in the John S.Nowell Collection and the Meiyintang Collection is illustrated by R.Krahl, Chinese Ceramics from the Meiyintang Collection, Vol.I, London, 1994, no.431.
