A rare white jade two-handled 'deer' cup
Qianlong fanggu six-character mark and of the period
The stone of very even white with attractive light cloudiness and carved as a simple cup incised with a band of key-fret at the foot and the rim, each handle also incised with key-fret on the sides and surmounted by an antlered deer crouching with front hooves resting on the cup lip. 10cm (4in) wide

    The present white jade cup is particularly rare for the deer finely carved with their forelegs placed on the rim of the cup. Compare a related octagonal jade cup and saucer, from the Qing Court Collection, with 'deer' handles, dated to the Qing Dynasty, illustrated in The Complete Collections of Treasures of the Palace Museum: Jadeware (III), Hong Kong, 1995, pl.205.
