The quality of the present yellow jade carving is a testament to the superb craftmanship of the master carver, from the choice of the yellow honey-chestnut coloured stone, to its clever use, reserving the chestnut-russet areas for the exterior of the boy and elephant and revealing the yellow jade at the front of the pebble and to the refined carving bringing to life the figure with minutely carved detailed hair with flowing curls and crowning diadem, to the sumptuous spray of nandina, with each berry individually carved, and undulating naturalistic curves of the lingzhi fungus.

The elephant is associated with the mythical Emperor Shun, one of the twenty-four paragons of filial piety and is also the mount for the Buddhist deity Samantabhadra. A boy climbing or riding an elephant symbolises the wish for good fortune.
