Girl and cats signed and dated 'Abercrombie '40' (lower right) oil on canvas 30 x 36in
Gertrude Abercrombie, a mostly self-taught Chicago artist, is known today for her surrealist imagery. Her works were highly personal, with focus given to content before technique. Realistic imagery laced with mystery and a haunting palette are the characteristics that led Abercrombie to stand out among her peers. Prominent regionally, Abercrombie's marriage to a jazz musician facilitated relationships with Dizzy Gillespie, Billie Holliday and many other creative types.
