In Edgar Payne, The Scenic Journey Schield's writes, "Payne was, at times, accompanied by friends on ...sketching excursions and learned from their example. One was watercolorist Norman St. Clair; another was Hanson Puthuff, who Payne knew from the Palette & Chisel Club. Puthuff's sparkling light and mountainous subject matter certainly influenced Payne's own efforts.
