Selden Connor Gile sometimes chose to paint watery, marshy scenes as in this freely sketched Small Orange Islands. Shaggy brushstrokes unify the foreground reflections, background clouds, and buildings in an overall pattern. The rhythmic composition presumably appealed to the painter's former owner, the distinguished California composer Lou Harrison (1917-2003).
