A pink and green overlay glass 'crab shell and weed' snuff bottle
Qing dynasty The compressed body with a slender neck, each side carved in relief with a scene of a crab rising out from crashing waves amongst weeds and rockwork. 5.8cm high.
According to research by Dr. Simon Kwan, the characters for 'crab shell' (mingshi) and 'weed' (xuanjuzhi) are homonyms for 'first place in the semi-final list of the Imperial exam". Thus, this bottle bears a wish for academic success. See Dr. Simon Kwan, The Muwen Tang Collection series, Vol.19, Glass Snuff Bottles, Hong Kong, 2009, p.83.
