An inside-painted glass 'birds and sampan' snuff bottle
Ding Erzhong, dated 1898 The body of compressed rectangular form with slightly sloping shoulders, both sides of the interior intricately painted with a landscape scene, one side with two figures and two young attendants on a sampan, the reverse side with three quails under a tree, both sides with kaishu inscriptions and two painted seal marks of the artist. 6.4cm high.
The inscription details how Ding is imitating the brushstrokes of Dan Qiusheng, the courtesy name of the Yuan dynasty artist Ke Jiusi (1290-1343). Ke Jiusi worked at the Imperial court, specialising in appraising painting and calligraphy. He is renowned for compositions of bamboo in ink, but could also paint landscape and 'flower and bird' paintings.
