An inscribed carnelian snuff bottle
Qing dynasty, 1800-1900
Of rectangular form with high shoulders, carved on one side with an inscription in kaishu, the reverse with an inscription in zhuanshu, the shoulders flanked by a pair of Buddhist lion ring handles.
6.7cm high.

    壺扁方形,直頸,平肩,橢圓圈足,下身微束。壺身一面陽刻「慎言語,節飲食。寡嗜欲,惜精神。」,並分別鈐一「芝」字圓印及「汀」字方印。另一面亦陽刻「持其志,無暴其氣。敏於事,而慎於言。」,並落款「一片冰心」。壺身兩側各雕一鋪首銜環耳。壺身以半透明紅玉髓作胎,暗紅質地,晶瑩潤澤。題詩中前句「持其志,無暴其氣」出自《孟子·公孫丑章句》,後一句「敏於事,而慎於言」則出於《論語》之中。
