A caramel-beige and cinnabar-red overlay glass 'pavilion and fisherman' snuff bottle
Attributed to Yangzhou, circa 1860-1890
Of compressed oval shape rising from a ringed foot to a slim cylindrical neck, the exterior of the body intricately carved through the cinnabar-red overlayes with a continuous landscape scene revealing a fisherman on a sampan returning to the pier with the catch of the day, an elderly man with a walking stick journeying towards a distant pavilion.

For a closely related example of this group, but with an additional layer of emerald-green see Moss, Graham and Tsang, A Treasury of Chinese Snuff Bottles: The Mary and George Bloch Collection, Vol.5, Glass, Hong Kong, 1995, pp.702-703, no.1012, was sold in these rooms, 25 May 2011, lot 122. It is now in the Franz collection, and is illustrated by Hedda Franz Chinese Art from the Hedda and Lutz Franz Collection, Volume Two, Glass, Hong Kong, 2012, p.204, no.1551. It was originally attributed to Li Junting school, but is now believed to have been made for Yu Changsui, an official who retired to Yangzhou in 1861 and passed away in 1883. The colour combination and style of carving on the current lot clearly demonstrates that it is from the same workshop, so the dating can tentatively be assigned to the same period.

壺呈長橢圓形，滑肩，橢圓形圈足。壺以褐棕色玻璃為地，一面雕有雲煙及水波紋，上套紅玻璃，一漁夫穿著蓑衣輕舟滑過，前景有一扇門，另一面雕有一老翁正在過橋，往大山石上的小亭去，旁有太湖石作襯托。內容寫意，雕工精緻。
一般見以棕色為地，套有紅、綠兩色，內容以文人題材為主的鼻煙壺，都是屬於揚州作坊作的，如此只有棕色及紅色的組合，也多歸納為此流派。與本壺之工藝接近的例子，可參考莫士撝, Victor Graham 及曾嘉寶著，《A Treasury of Chinese Snuff Bottles: The Mary and George Bloch Collection》，第5冊，頁702-703，編號1012，後拍賣於香港邦瀚斯，2011年5月25日，拍品編號122。此壺有三層套玻璃，比本壺多綠色一層，其後成為Franz珍藏，見Hedda Franz著，《Chinese Art from the Hedda and Lutz Franz Collection》，第2冊，玻璃，香港，2012，頁204，編號1551。該壺本定為李韵亭流派，但現今的研究指出，應為于昌遂而作的，他是一位已退休的官員，1861年到揚州居住，於1883年去世。很明顯，此壺之雕工與本拍品應出自同一個玻璃作坊，因此斷代方面可有所參考。
