Footnotes

  • During the Qing dynasty, Yixing was considered as one of the four major centres of ceramic production, together with Dehua in the Fujian province, Shiwan in the Guangdong province and Jingdezhen. Although Yixing is famed for its production of teapots, the connoisseurship of tea-drinking and teapots was usually among the retired officials and scholars. Other Yixing wares for scholarly and utilitarian uses, including the current lot, were commissioned during the nineteenth century.

See three other Yixing snuff bottles examples of similar form, illustrated in Moss, Graham and Tsang, A Treasury of Chinese Snuff Bottles: The Mary and George Bloch Collection, Vol.6, Arts of the Fire, Hong Kong, 2008, pp.961-966, nos. 1458,1459 and 1460. The authors argue that such groups of Yixing snuff bottles of identical shape to have been made during the Jiaqing or early Daoguang periods. See also an example with landscape panels set against a blue enamel ground from the Margaret Polak collection, sold in our New York rooms, 24 March 2010, lot 222.

瑪麗及莊智博鼻煙壺收藏中亦有宜興窯燒造的鼻煙壺,其中三件與本壺形制十分類似,參見莫士撝, Victor Graham 及曾嘉寶著,《A Treasury of Chinese Snuff Bottles: The Mary and George Bloch Collection》,第6冊,第三部份,頁961-966,編號1458,1459,1460。
