A turquoise matrix 'grapes' snuff bottle
Qing dynasty, 1800-1900
Naturalistically carved in the form of a strand of grapes, all suspending from rustic stems and jagged leaves.

    The production of turquoise matrix fruit-form snuff bottles originated in the Qianlong period, and continued through the late Qing period. For examples of a turquoise matrix 'pomegranate' snuff bottle and a turquoise matrix 'grapes' snuff bottle in the National Palace Museum, see Snuff Bottles in the collection of the National Palace Museum, Taipei, 1991, p.266, pl.403 and 404. The colour of the stone is pale and half-way between green and blue, free of matrix veining.

    石色翠綠,滿佈大小褐黑色脈絡,壺呈象生葡萄形,其枝葉藤蔓橫生,果實纍纍,寓意瓜瓞綿綿,子孫萬代。

    始於乾隆時期,便有以綠松石雕成象生瓜果鼻煙壺,並延至十九世紀,在台北國立故宮博物院內,便藏有以綠松石雕石榴及葡萄形象生鼻煙壺,石色偏青綠,石近乎沒有脈絡,相信一直保存至十九世紀後期,非經常把玩,是清中期的典型宮廷例子。見國立故宮博物院,《故宮鼻煙壺》,台北,1991,頁266,圖版403及404。而本壺則成承了此傳統。
