  Carved porcelain snuff bottles with Yao's signature are rare. For another snuff bottle with similar potter's signature to the current example from the Robert G. Piper Collection, see The International Chinese Snuff Bottle Society Journal, Vol.38, Number 3, JICSBS, Winter 2006, illustrated on the cover. Although the name Yao Weidong is unrecorded in traditional connoisseurship, closely related contemporaneous snuff bottles made by known master potters such as Chen Guozhi and Wang Bingrong support the notion that Yao had indeed worked as a porcelain carver in Jingdezhen during the nineteenth century.

  壺呈扁長形，滑肩，圈足。壺前後景物相連，以一河兩岸方式雕漁人山水圖，正面一岸有山石樹叢，一岸有茅屋人家，壺背面則雕有船中垂釣，以松枝為親托，悠然清靜，文人氣色濃厚。壺身紋飾乃雕琢而成，間有同瓷漿直接點上礬頭，又陰刻水波紋，形成三個層次的立體效果，工藝細膩。底部陰刻「姚位東作」篆書款。
  
  攜「姚位東」款識的鼻煙壺極為少見，目前僅見一件牙黃雕瓷任務山水鼻煙壺，曾刊登於《國際中國鼻煙壺協會期刊》封面及封底，見國際中國鼻煙壺協會編，《JICSBS》，2006年冬季，38卷，第3期，該壺除形偏扁圓以外，工藝及紋飾都十分相似，而壺底亦刻「姚位東作」四字篆書款。姚位東一名雖未在文獻中有所著錄，但就其工藝及風格來對比，應屬與十九世紀景德鎮瓷雕名家陳國治、王炳榮等同時期的瓷雕家，其作品雕工細緻，可比同時期其他藝人。
