Footnotes

  • Illustrated:
Bob Stevens, Snuff Bottles, New York, 1976, p.244, pl.885

The term rooster or cockerel symbolises promotion and reputation, the peony represents the flower of wealth and the paradise flycatcher carries the meaning of longevity, which altogether bear the meaning of promotion, reputation, wealth and longevity. For a similar example by the same artist, see Inkplay in Microcosm : Inside-Painted Chinese Snuff Bottles, The Humphrey K. F. Hui Collection, Chinese University of Hong Kong, Art Museum, Hong Kong, 2002, no.69.

Ye Zhongsan (1869-1945) followed the painting characteristic and subject matter of Zhou Leyuan's inside-painted snuff bottles, also depicted stories from traditional literature story.

    Bob Stevens, 《Snuff Bottles》,
