An inside-painted rock-crystal 'opera singers' snuff bottles
Tang Zichuan, circa 1850-1900
The body of compressed globular form flanked by ring handles issuing from lion masks, elaborately painted on the interior with a reclining opera singer on one side, the reverse with a portrait of two ladies with kaishu inscriptions detailing how it was presented to an associate politely referred to as 'elder brother'.
6.5cm high.

    壺呈扁瓶形,方中帶圓,直口,兩側飾獸首銜環紋,橢圓形圈足。兩面均崁彩色印刷仕女圖,一面有一位仕女手持花卉紋團扇坐著,衣飾華麗,神情溫婉,其身後有另一位年紀較長的仕女,上題有「厚齋一兄大人正之,弟湯子川」。另一面有一位仕女托著腮,依附小桌側臥,其衣飾與壺正面件長仕女接近。

    湯子川生平,生卒不詳,清末民初鼻煙壺內畫家,活躍於清晚期。
