An inside-painted glass 'horses and boats' snuff bottle
Sun Xingwu, circa 1897-1899
The semi-translucent body of compressed rectangular form with gently curved shoulders surmounted by a cylindrical neck, the interior painted with a continuous scene of figures in front of a city entrance on one side, the reverse with a fisherman sailing a sampan on a pond, all against a mountainous backdrop, inscribed with signature and seal mark of the artist.

    Sun Xingwu (active 1894-1900), who was resident in Beijing, was inspired by Zhou Leyuan in his early period. It can also be seen that Sun painted inside-painted snuff bottle with Zhou Leyuan and Ma Shaoxuan signatures, revealing his appreciation of the masters. After he developed his personal style, he always painted city sites as subject matter, with comprehensive content, which is demonstrated in this bottle.

    壺呈扁瓶形，滑肩，橢圓形圈足。通景繪山水畫，漁人撐船歸城裡去，構圖層次分明，遠山，樹林，圍城，城門，流水，小橋，商旅，用色和諧，畫法簡單，上題「沙頭水淺魚兒少，深著一篙歸去休。孫星五。」，上繪一不能識別之橢圓形印及一「印」白文方印。

    孫星五(活躍於1894-1900)，曾居北京，早期創作靈感多取自周樂元，也有見孫星五仿周樂元及馬少宣之鼻煙壺，自成一家以後，他的個人風格明顯，以繪風俗場景為多，景物豐富，本壺是其典型風格的例子。
