Li Yucheng, 1820-1870 Of compressed ovoid form, rising from rounded shoulders to a cylindrical neck, intricately carved with a continuous scene of a five-clawed dragon amidst flame and clouds scrolls above a band of crashing waves, applied with a rich caramel-brown glaze, the base incised with two-character zhuanshu mark yucheng. 5.2cm high.
For a closely related carved porcelain 'dragons' snuff bottle made by Li Yucheng, but in white, see Moss, Graham and Tsang, A Treasury of Chinese Snuff Bottles: The Mary and George Bloch Collection, Vol.6, Hong Kong, 2002, pp.780-781, no.1362, sold in these rooms, 27 May 2012, lot 8.
As with the reputable nineteenth century porcelain carver Wang Bingrong, the precise dating of Li Yucheng's works are unrecorded in traditional ceramics connoisseurship. The scarcity of examples with Li's signatures compared to that of Wang's may suggest the latter to be a more commercially successful artist who subsequently had a great impact on Li Yucheng's works. Nevertheless, typical features such as the presence of the twin dragons and the distinctive flaming pearl that resembles a bi disc assist in differentiating Li's works from that of Wang's.
