A famille rose 'mother and child' snuff bottle and snuff dish
Qianlong iron-red four-character seal mark, 1880-1940 Of flattened globular form raised on a splayed foot, each side with a central panel of a young mother and a child, the sides with bats amidst lotus foliage on a pale turquoise ground, all enamelled in vivid colours. 5.7cm high.
Illustrated: Paul Braga, San Francisco Chinese Snuff Bottles Collectors, Part 1 , Arts of Asia, September-October 1983, Vol.13, No.5, p.109, pl.3
Another of this group of porcelain bottles is illustrated by Moss, Graham and Tsang, The Art of the Chinese Snuff Bottle, Hong Kong, 1993, pp.383-384, no.225, where the authors argue that these bottles, which copy Qianlong originals, were probably commercially produced after the sacking of the Summer Palace in 1860, but before the Second World War.
Compare another relatively close example, illustrated by Humphrey K. F. Hui and Christopher C. H. Sin, An Imperial Qing Tradition: An Exhibition of Chinese Snuff Bottles from the Collections of Humphrey K. F. Hui and Christopher C. H. Sin, San Francisco, Phoenix Art Museum, 1994, p.25, pl.15.
