A silver-mounted and inscribed rock-crystal 'pavilion' snuff bottle
Qing dynasty, 1736-1850 Of compressed circular form with inscriptions carved in relief on one side, the reverse with a crane hovering above a pavilion amidst ruyi clouds and crashing waves, the neck mounted with a ruyi pendant. 5.2cm high.
The auspicious design here is referred to as hai wu tian shou, which literally translates as 'may the ancient house for storing changes bring the longevity'. The inscriptions express the blessings of longevity.
See a rock-crystal 'Buddhist Emblems' snuff bottle of almost identical form from the Mary and George Bloch collection, illustrated by Moss, Graham and Tsang, A Treasury of Chinese Snuff Bottles: The Mary and George Bloch Collection, Vol.2, Hong Kong, 1998, p.416, no.334. See also a rock-crystal snuff bottle carved with a floral design, preserved in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, and illustrated by Helen White, Snuff Bottles from China - The Victoria and Albert Museum Collection, 1990, pl.43, no.2.
參看瑪麗及莊智博收藏另外一件清中期水晶雕八吉祥鼻煙壺，其形制及雕刻工藝都與本壺相類，莫士撝, Victor Graham 及曾嘉寶著，《A Treasury of Chinese Snuff Bottles: The Mary and George Bloch Collection》，第2冊，第二部份，頁416，編號334。
