Scott Campbell initially studied biochemistry at the University of Texas, but his plans to become a medical illustrator fell by the wayside when he found work at a tattoo parlour in San Francisco. By 2001 he was living in New York and running his own studio Saved Tattoo in the up-and-coming area of Williamsburg, Brooklyn. It was a visit from Heath Ledger in 2005 that drew Campbell to the attention of the press, and a long list of celebrity clients was to quickly follow. He began experimenting with mixed media art around the same time, and soon came to discover that it was just as popular as his skin work, resulting in a string of sell-out exhibitions. His cut dollar bills often mimic the imagery of tattoos, filled as they are with images of religion and death.
