Having studied in Georgia and Miami, José Parlá is now based in Brooklyn. His early street paintings made dramatic use of gesture in an attempt to recapture the undeniable power of the instinctual mark-making of primitive man. Since then his work has developed to include hints of text and calligraphy, but these suggestions are never fully revealed or explained. The earthy tones and textures of his paintings imply a patina of age, while his style remains unmistakably modern. Despite strong ties with the USA, Parlá's reputation is now global, recent projects including a collaboration with French-born J.R. for the 11th Havana Biennial in Cuba, with his work also held in the collection of the British Museum, London.
