Footnotes

  • John Perello, now better known as JonOne, spent his formative years in New York's Harlem, an environment rich in street art. One of his most important early influences was fellow artist Anthony "A-One" Clark (1964-2001), who introduced him to the wider world of art, encouraged him to visit museums and galleries, and showed him that it was possible to make a living from his work. Since the 1980s JonOne has lived in Paris, working initially from the Hospital Ephemeral, a disused hospital building in the city's 18th arrondissement which had become a squat largely inhabited by artists. It was here that JonOne began painting on canvas, combining his street aesthetic with a visual style inspired by artists as diverse as Jackson Pollock, Jean Dubuffet and Henri Matisse.
