Blek Le Rat first became aware of Street Art during a visit to New York City in 1971, but it was a decade later before he began to produce his own street works. Determined to create something which was distinct from the free hand spray painting that he had seen in the USA, Blek turned to stencils, with small images of rats quickly appearing through the streets of his hometown of Paris. Within two years he was producing large scale works, and his output has continued to develop ever since. Using ideas which fuse the composition of old master paintings with the imagery of contemporary mass media, Blek Le Rat's work has proved massively influential to the new generation of Street artists who have emerged in the last two decades, most famously Banksy, who has openly declared his admiration for the Frenchman's innovation.
