The first of Invader's 'Space Invader' mosaics appeared in Paris in the mid 1990s, but it was only in 1998 that his full scale 'invasions' began in earnest. At first spreading to most major cities in France, these unmistakable images, taken from or influenced by arcade games of the late 1970s and early 1980s, later began to appear around the world, with the location of each recorded in books and maps created by the artist. The low resolution graphics of iconic arcade games were perfectly suited to representation in mosaic tiles, with the resulting works generally appearing in busy urban locations that maximise their potential audience.
