A large Setsu katana with a cutting test inscription
Attributed to Shodai Kunisada, Edo period (17th century)
Hon-zukuri, iori-mune, very shallow torii-zori, chu-gissaki, the forging pattern itame mixed with mokume in ji-nie, the tempered edge gunome-midare and sugu-ba with ko-maru boshi, the tang with an added tip and with four holes and suji-kai file marks and gold-inlaid cutting inscription and date Matsuba saidan futatsu-do Shoho yo-nen hachi-gatsu nijuni-nichi toga no mono and signed Yamano Kanjuro and kao; two-piece gold-foil habaki; 34 5/8in (88cm) long; in a shirasaya with sayagaki, signed and dated by Yoshikawa.


With kantei certificate no. 13643 issued by the Nihon Token Hozon Kai (Japan Sword Preservation Society), dated 1997.3.2.

Footnotes

  • This very long sword is inscribed with a cutting test inscription in gold inlay. The test was performed by one Yamano Kanjuro on the 22nd day of the eighth month of 1647. It states that it cut easily through the torsos of two criminals.
