A koto katana in mounts
Attributed to the Fuyuhiro Wakasa group, Muromachi period (16th century)
Hon-zukuri, iori-mune with a wide shinogi, torii-zori curvature and an extended kissaki, forged in a tight masame pattern and a gunome-choji-midare tempered edge with nie, ara-nie, sunagashi and tobi-yaki, the boshi midare-komi, carved on both sides with naginata-hi and with a Buddhist ken on the omote and bonji on the ura; tang o-suriage with two holes and kiri file marks; silver one-piece habaki; 28 13/16in (72.3cm) long

Koshirae comprising a black-lacquer saya decorated in alternating bands of glossy and ishime spirals; the tsuka fitted with shakudo nanako-ji fuchi-gashira carved with crashing waves in high relief, the shakudo menuki carved as birds in flowers; the iron sukashi tsuba carved with maples with gold nunome details
