A warabe gusoku suit of armor for a child
Edo period, 19th century
The components lacquered gold and laced in bright orange and comprising a sixty-two plate ko-boshi kabuto mounted on the top with a four-stage gilt and silver tehen kanamono decorated with swirling clouds against a nanako ground, the five-lame wide shikoro ending in large fukigaeshi applied with stenciled doe skin and gilt-metal Katabami crests, the mabisashi applied with stenciled doe skin and a gilt-metal dragon in swirling clouds, the edge trimmed with gilt-metal fukurin, the helmet adorned with a circular maedate and kuwagata; the russet-iron menpo forged with a detachable nose plate, standing flanges on the cheeks, and applied with a stiff bristle mustache and chin-tuft, and fitted with a four-lame yodarekake; the cuirass a nuinobe do with the lower section constructed of kiritsuke kozane in dangae do style, the do fitted with seven sections of five-lame kusazuri applied with animal fur along the lowest lame; the sendan no ita and kyubi no ita decorated with a swallow in shakudo on stenciled doe skin; chu-sode; sleeves chain mail fitted with gourd-shaped plates on the forearms; the kawara haidate lacquered with large gold "suns" against a silver ground; tsutsu suneate; two wood storage boxes; no stand
