Howard Reifsnyder was a wealthy Philadelphia wool merchant in the early 20th century who, among other things, collected rugs, books, Asian ceramics and American colonial furniture. The dispersal of his collection after his death in 1929 by auction is still considered a major event in U.S. collecting history. That sale's 'Oriental Art and Oil Paintings' catalogue, comprising of 600 lots, is included in this lot.
