Leopard and kill signed and dated 'David Shepherd 8 '62' (lower right); signed and titled on the reverse and inscribed: The Studio / Oakhill Cottage / Frensham / Surrey' oil on canvas 20 x 28in (50.8 x 71.2cm)
Inscribed on canvas on the reverse 'B 2437'.
David Shepherd started his career as an aviation artist and owes a great deal to the Services who commissioned paintings that took him all over the world. The RAF flew him from Mukulla in Aden to Kenya in 1960, which proved a turning point in his career when they commissioned his very first wildlife painting - a rhino on a runway - he never looked back. Shepherd is known internationally as an artist and ambassador for wildlife. In 1960 he became a conservationist overnight when he came across 255 zebra lying dead around a poisoned waterhole in Tanzania. Since then, with the help of supporters across the world, the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation (DSWF) has given away over £5 million in grants to save critically endangered mammals in their wild habitat and benefit the local people who share their environment. Further works by David Shepherd from the Collection of Margie and Robert E. Petersen will be included in Bonhams sale of European Paintings in October 2013.
