The stories about Model T Fords are legend; some of them are even true. Although legend usually states that the Ford Model T was the first mass-produced automobile, that honor is probably due to the Curved-Dash Olds, although the even Duryea was certainly a series-produced motor car. Ford, however, had an efficient assembly line designed and took industrial mass production to heights never before achieved.

At first, the Model T was available in several colors - not just the black for which it is justly famous. But as production volumes increased, the paint process was delaying completion of the cars. When it was determined that black was the fastest drying color of automotive enamel paint, black was adopted for all Model Ts. And as volume increased, costs dropped, and so, too, did the prices.

The Model T was a very basic automobile featuring a 176.7 cubic-inch L-head, four-cylinder engine with a cast iron block. The horsepower may have been rated at a modest 22.5, but the torque was a much healthier 83 pound-feet at a low 900rpm. The sturdy engine was mated to a two-speed planetary transmission and a torque tube transmitted power to the rear axle. The I-beam front axle and the drawn steel rear axle housing were suspended by transverse leaf springs. A contracting band provided breaking at the transmission, while the hand-brake engages rear wheel brakes.

1924 saw the introduction of two new two-door enclosed body styles to replace the long-in-the-tooth center door Tudor. First was a new Tudor with the doors mounted in the front of the car, rather than the center and second was the 5-window Coupe with turtle back trunk featured on the offered lot.

Costing $525 when new, the close-coupled, handsomely proportioned two-seat coupe is nicely trimmed in dark green with black fenders. Inside, the original fabric seats and panels have stood the test of time well. The engine bay is clean and neatly organized. An optional electric starter is fitted making the whole experience that much better.

The Model T is one of the best ways to get into the classic car hobby or build out a collection. With so many Model T Touring cars around, it is a rare site to see another body style, especially one that was only produced for the last few years of production.
