The bowl of textured dark brown lacquer, enclosing a lacquered plate of shibuichi-nuri, delicately engraved with Shoki walking in a shower of rain, the reverse similarly engraved with clouds and slanting rain, signed Somin, Zeshin utsusu. 4.5cm (1¾in).

    Zeshin made a number of inro, netsuke and other objects using techniques and styles after sword-fitting makers. On the present example, he has faithfully copied the shibuichi alloy, as well as the engraving for which the 18th century sword-fitting maker Yokoya Somin was renowned.
