Of upright form, bearing a roiro ground, lacquered and inlaid with a hare and toad wrestling, in gold takamakie and pewter, the reverse with tokusa grass and ferns in takamakie with inlaid raden and the interior of nashiji, signed Hogen Toshun kore o utsusu, with two seals and a two-line inscription; with an ivory ojime of a hare seated on a circular base. 8.5cm (3 3/8in).

    The inscription states that the design is copied from a painting by Toba Sojo Kakuyu, held by the Kozanji temple in Kyoto. The original design is part of a hand-scroll of animal caricatures traditionally attributed to Toba Sojo, also known as Kakuyu (1053-1140). It was later copied by Kano Yoshinobu, also known as Hogen Toshun (1747-1797), the fourth Kano master at Surugadai, Edo.
