Of wide form, deeply engraved within the dark shibuichi-nuri ground with Moso gathering bamboo shoots, the reverse similarly engraved with stands of bamboo, inscribed Hanabusa Itcho ga, the interior of rogin-nuri with kinji edges, signed Josen with kao; with a shakudo ojime in the form of a bamboo node; and a black lacquer hako-netsuke bearing an ishime ground and lacquered with Daruma meditating. 6.4cm (2½in) wide.

    Josen worked in the early 19th century and produced a number of inro with engraved designs some adapted from works by the celebrated painter and illustrator Hanabusa Itcho (1652-1724).
